With this post, David, you have identified the heart of a leadership model that is elusive to many - a values-driven, emotionally intelligent approach as opposed to one where individuals try to fit into a style or mode of leadership or are groomed (or self-groom) to replace an existing person. The values-driven, emotionally intelligent leader is crucial in our society (amongst lawyers and in general) and even more important in a pandemic/post-pandemic work environment. FWIW we teach just such a course at Northwestern, training young lawyers to be leaders, whether that is a formal, "top of the heap" leader or a lateral leader who emerges amongst a group working as a team.
