I have written here last year about the importance for teachers to be intentional about the time they take during summer breaks for rest and renewal. The new school year starts sooner that we think it will, every year. The first day of school will be here before we know it if we do not take the time to savor and rest.
I will be back in class 72 days from today. I will start again, with a new group of students (actually, two new groups of students). We will go back to square one, and methodically take each step forward, until we make it to April once again, having achieved our goals for the school year.
Usually May is part of my rest time, but this May has been difficult. I spent the first two weeks trying to rest, but actually working really hard on a large project - my fourth book. And then… it was my turn at the Covid roulette wheel. So I have been fairly sick and under the weather for the third and fourth weeks of May. I am fine now, if somewhat fatigued. I have finished my school obligations, and will be getting back to the book soon. And the usual list of house and garden projects.
So I think it is time for The Chalkboard Life to take its summer vacation. Last year, I took July off. This year, June. And perhaps July as well. I plan for sure be back by August 6th.
What are your plans for time off this summer? Please leave a comment and let us know!
One of the weirder parts about living in Japan is getting used to the idea that school starts in April. So my summer vacation doesn't start for another two months! That said, I'm really looking forward to just having some time to do absolutely nothing. It feels like the semester is a constant churn of lesson planning, grading, and then planning again, so taking some time to just sit and stare at the rice fields is number one on my list. Anyway, glad you're feeling better, and good luck with the book writing.
I’m glad that you are feeling better! For me the low-level fatigue lingered. So take that break! And thank you for reminding us all to do the same.
